UK and Belgium boost revenue body for Uganda (09/07/07)

The UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Belgian Kingdom have signed an agreement to jointly fund the implementation of the Uganda Revenue Authority's sh28b comprehensive modernisation plan launched in 2006.

This brings to four the number of donors jointly financing the plan through a basket fund arrangement, DFID said in a statement. Belgium will contribute euros 2m (about sh4.7b).

"In addition to the UK, the Dutch and Danish governments have each committed themselves to providing respectively 5m pounds, (sh17.4b), euros2m (sh4.7b) and 5m Danish Kroner (sh1.6b)," read the statement.

The plan will modernise the processes and systems in order to make the tax body efficient in revenue collection. It targets to increase collections from sh2, 231b in 2006/07 to sh3,022b next financial year.

"This increase in revenue collected by URA will enable the scaling up of critical government programmes in health, education, water and roads and reduce the Government's dependence on international donors and aid."
