Starcomms earmarks $200m for network expansion (12/07/07)

Nigeria's largest CDMA 3G mobile network, Starcomms Limited has reiterated its commitment to change the face of telecommunications in Nigeria with an investment of over $200m into its expansion programme.

Already, the company has committed over $150m to its network expansion bid in the last seven months with another $50m being earmarked for expansion to over 30 cities across the country.

Chief Executive Officer of the company, Maher Qubain, made the disclosure at a press briefing in honour of visiting top officials of Qualcomm, patent owner of the CDMA technology, led by the Vice President, Dr. Tom O'Neil who was accompanied by Pertti Johansson, President, Qualcomm Middle East & Africa.

Under the new expansion arrangement, the cities of Abuja, Onitsha, Aba and Asaba are expected to go on air shortly, while Kaduna, Abeokuta and Zaria would be connected afterwards.

According to a release signed by Mr. Okey Nwachukwu, Media Relations and Research, Starcoms, the visit was to enabled the company compare notes with Starcoms so as to identify areas where assistance might be given in order to be abreast of the latest technological development in telecommunications.

One of such areas is the deployment of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies, which offers unparalleled expertise and an engineering team with the most extensive design and testing experience with CDMA and 3G technologies in the world.

The parley, which held at Eko Hotels & Suites, enabled the officials to provide fresh insight into developments in the global ICT marketplace especially the CDMA platform, which is the most popular telecommunications channel in the United States.

Starcomms was also used to demonstrate theefficacy of CDMA in Nigeria, being the first to adopt the technology in the West African sub-region and currently Nigeria's largest CDMA 3G mobile network.

Essentially, the CDMA is a "spread spectrum" technology, which allows many users to occupy the same time and frequency allocations in a given band or space.

The platform is an advanced Third Generation (3G) wireless technology, commercialized in Nigeria by Starcomms and has made huge impact in transforming the Nigerian telecommunications landscape.

"The system allows subscribers access to broadband high-speed wireless internet services capable of achieving peak data rates with a download speed of up to 2.4 Mbps and an average speed of 300 to 600 Kbps.

It will also enable subscribers watch clear video, movies and broadcast over their 3G-enabled mobile handsets. It further assigns unique codes to each communication to differentiate it from others in the same spectrum,"the statement said
