Twenty buses to arrive in Liberia soon (08/08/07)

It has been disclosed in Monrovia that 20 used buses donated to Liberia by the Government of Spain will arrive in the country at the end of August.

Presidential Press Secretary, Cyrus Badio, who made the disclosure, said the buses would be accompanied by spare parts and experts who will train Liberians on how to operate and maintain the vehicles.

"It is the President's hope that the provision of the buses will help to ease the transportation burden".

The buses are a response to an appeal made by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf when she visited Spain some time ago.

Public transportation remains a major problem in the country creating inconvenience for commuters who report to work, school and at other places very late due to an acute shortage of commercial vehicles.

The government operated a public transport system under the Monrovia Transit Authority (M.T.A) prior to the civil war with buses purchased from France.

Currently, two dilapidate MTA buses ply the streets along with private commercial vehicles but they are unable to meet the huge demand of the public.
