USAID airlifts US$2.9 million of emergency commodities (25/09/07)

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing an additional US$400,000 to assist flood-affected populations in Eastern Uganda. The funds will be used to purchase and distribute shelter materials, improve access to safe water and provide agricultural and other necessary assistance.

This additional funding brings the total USAID contribution to Uganda for flooding to US$500,000. USAID provided an initial US$100,000 in emergency assistance after U.S. Ambassador Steven A. Browning declared a disaster due to the impact of the flooding.

Since May 2007, heavy rains have led to flooding in Uganda's Teso Region, particularly affecting Katakwi and Amuria districts, where subsistence farming families have suffered crop losses and damage to huts.

The cumulative effects of the rainfall have begun to compromise the structural integrity of many dirt homes, contaminate wells, inundate latrines, and wash away seeds. There is also significant crop loss, minimal food reserves, and a lack of planting material for the upcoming agricultural season.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional support as appropriate.
