Nigeria saves N158 billion from technology agreements (14/03/08)

 

National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), an agency mandated to ensure efficient process for the adaptation of imported technology in Nigeria yesterday said it has saved the country N158billion in the last 25 years through its activities.

 
 
Director-General of NOTAP, Dr. David Akosa Okongwuwho revealed this during a visit to the agency by the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Alhassan Bako Zaku. He said the financial savings were made from the review of technology transfer agreements between Nigerian companies and their foreign technical partners.

He said NOTAP's intervention in the negotiation of technology transfer agreements led to the saving of over N158billion for the country in foreign exchange transactions involving royalty and licensing fees payments from 1983 to 2007.

According to the Director General , the technology agency, recorded the highest savings of N33.841 billion in 2007 from review of various contractual terms and conditions of agreements, while a greater number of such technology transfer agreements were said to be domiciled in the oil and gas sector.

Speaking on the progress made in the registration and patenting of indigenous inventions and innovations, Okongwu said the agency has received notice for 178inventions and121 applications for patent out of which 58 have been granted patent.

He said one of the critical functions of the agency was to improve the negotiating skills of Nigerians with a view to ensuring the acquirement of the best contractual terms and conditions by Nigerian parties entering into any contract or agreement for the transfer of foreign technology.

"It is the responsibility of NOTAP to ensure that technology produces concrete results and solutions that would help solve the myriad of social, economic,industrial and political problems of our nation", he said.The Minister tasked the organisation to rise up to the challenges posed by the country's vision to attain greater economic and technological heights by 2020.

As part its statutory functions, NOTAP is expected to provide technology advisory services with regards to the negotiation of technology transfer agreements between Nigerian firms and their foreign counterparts.
