We are pleased to announce our 4th Summit to bring together government officials along with key decision makers in the aid and development community wishing to work closer with investors and the international business sector.
HDS 2009 will continue to serve the needs of businesses wishing to partner and supply to the lead agencies and this year will have a special focus on the huge ongoing investment we are now seeing from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries into African infrastructure and agriculture.
| Participating Governments |
Once again the Summit will be held with the support of the Government of Kenya. HDS 2009 will see strong ministerial participation for agriculture, health, finance, trade and investment. The following Governments will be represented: |
█ Kenya
█ Egypt
█ Uganda
█ Tanzania
█ Sudan
█ GCC Member Countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia & UAE)
The Humanitarian Development Summit has an outstanding record in attracting the leading UN agencies, NGOs and donors to participate in bilateral meetings with potential companies, partners and investors. In 2009 these will include FAO, IFAD, OCHA, UNDP, UNHCR, UNOPS, WFP, WHO, Global Fund, Advance Aid, ADRA, CARE, PEPFAR, Concern, Inter-Agency Working Group, ICRC, Mercy Corps, Merlin, Oxfam, African Development Bank, Save the Children and World Vision International. |
| Focused Private Meetings on Procurement & Partnership |
Half of the summit time will be devoted to speeches and presentations and the other half devoted to one-to-one private meetings. The afternoons of both 29 & 30 September will see private roundtables set up for the Government Ministries, leading United Nations agencies, NGOs and donor agencies. Prior to the summit, confirmed sponsors and delegates will be given a choice of preferred pre-scheduled meetings. |
| GCC Investment in African Agriculture & Infrastructure |
GCC food imports are now estimated to be in the region of $14 bn per annum. Major sovereign wealth and development funds in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain are all now gearing up agro-investment in Africa and especially in the North and Eastern African countries. The rising need for food imports in the GCC comes at a time when the exportable agricultural surplus worldwide has declined. This agro-investment also needs to be matched with investment into physical infrastructure and agricultural technology. Hence the summit will see major participation from GCC Ministers, Ambassadors, bankers, development funds and trade financiers - all of whom will be available to meet as part of the roundtable meeting format.
The GCC countries wish to avoid negative outcomes that have been seen elsewhere in the minerals and hydrocarbon sectors in Africa and are therefore focusing on building a mutually beneficial and solid strategic partnership with Africa in order to answer needs and interests on both sides. This would include both opening channels for food security supply to the GCC countries while at the same time supporting infrastructure development in African nations so that growing food supply can provide for both local as well as external demand. Investment in African agricultural development will play a crucial role in building this partnership. It will directly profit the development of some regions especially if investments are dedicated to small scale farmers. |
Not forgetting the importance of infrastructure investment in the host country of the Summit, we will also have a special focus on “Kenya Vision 2030” - the countryís development blueprint. The “Vision” is based on 3 pillars: |
█ Economic pillar
█ Social pillar
█ Political pillar |
Infrastructure investment has already started and both local and international companies wishing to tender on contracts will have the chance to join the summit and meet key officials from the Kenyan Ministry for Planning and Development. |
With our traditionally strong support from UN agencies and NGOs, the programme will also include a special focus on private sector partnering and procurement especially in the health and logistics sectors. Special panel sessions will include participation from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria, UNHCR, UNOPS, IFRC, ICRC, Inter-Agency Working Group on Emergency Preparedness, World Vision, Oxfam, Concern, CARE and Advance Aid. |
| Health Promotion & Disease Prevention |
The need for a coordinated response to the health problems encountered in the developing world and the ongoing healthcare treatment required for the many people already suffering from diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis demands a key role for the global heath community. The various international companies already involved in the supply of key drugs and the infrastructure required to ensure those supplies reach their intended destination make this a critical issue. In addition, the new challenges faced by people affected by emergencies and the victims of conflict present new challenges, challenges that the aid and development community cannot meet alone. The summit will provide the opportunity to meet with some of the principal organisations involved in this area, including the likes of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Joint UN Mission on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria, the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS,Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Stop TB Partnership and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). |
| Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) |
With ever more instances of natural disasters and conflict throughout the developing world causing considerable loss of life and disrupting national economies, information and communication technologies (ICT) can help reduce their impact and avoid impeding sustainable development. The summit will prove invaluable in bringing together the principal stakeholders involved in developing, deploying and using telecommunications/ICT for disaster mitigation and to serve as a forum in which they can map out definitive strategies and adopt practical measures aimed at giving telecommunications/ICT a central role in all issues of disaster management, such as early warning, preparedness, relief and response. The summit works closely with some of the key organisations involved in these areas, such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and World Vision International. |
| Logistics & Supply Chain Management |
The delivery of key materials in a timely fashion from centralised hubs to those areas most in need is perhaps the key issue in the aid and development community. The support provided for efficient and effective humanitarian action by catalysing the professionalism of humanitarian operations, increasing safety and security and considering environmental impact is immeasurable. The summit provides a forum whereby the logistical challenges faced can be highlighted and where aid and development agencies can engage with the private sector and share the lessons learned with all stakeholders, encouraging dialogue and interaction on best practices. Key participants include the likes of the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and World Vision International. |
The importance of achieving a stable environment in which political and economic growth can take place is of course one of the fundamental challenges faced in the continent, having a huge bearing on the development of core infrastructure and the safe delivery of key aid, equipment and resources. A crucial role played is that of private security companies, who provide support services for various UN/NGO projects and programmes. There has also been an increase in military involvement from foreign actors from outside the continent, as the world seeks to promote increased governance and regional stability within the continent (the recent incidents of piracy in Somalia provide a prime example of such threats).
